Chapter 19

Dusting the snow off the stumpy log next to Jessica, who Perceived through the trees with a dazed face, Gemma took a seat and padded her mittens together to shake the excess flakes. Her gaze flitted from Erik and three of the Knights—huddled behind a bush straight to her right—to Rainy and Jamie, who squatted behind a pine tree a little up and to the left. Blank notebooks spread out over a rock in front of them for recording information. Jamie somehow sensed her shift in focus and snapped his head up, locking eyes with her.

Gemma’s cheeks burned.

She ripped her gaze away, though his lingered on the side of her face. The heat of it, even at fifteen feet or so away, created a psychological sizzle on her skin, and Gemma rubbed at the spot with her damp mitten, both to cool her runaway imagination and block his view of her eyes. Eventually he’d corner her, either to apologize or, worse, confess his feelings. Even with the five days she’d had to think about it, she still had no idea what she’d say.

At least Jamie isn’t the type to make a move. He had all this time to tell me how he felt, and he still hasn’t. Maybe he won’t bring it up at all. Maybe something will break the tension, and we’ll just go right back to being . . . being . . . Her stomach sank, and despite her attempts to avoid it, her brain supplied the missing word.

Friends? She grimaced. That’s what made this so tricky. Her attachment to Jamie went beyond her other friendships, possibly because of the way he’d cared for and fought for her and Oliver from the very beginning. Her trust in him lingered, even after he’d outed her, and she missed his company . . . but from a romantic standpoint? Something was missing.

Gemma sniffled.

Jessica blinked out of Perceiving. “You okay?”

“I’m cold.”

Jessica leaned forward, zeroing in on Gemma’s face for clues, probably doubtful of such a simplistic excuse. When Gemma succumbed to temptation and pulled off her mitten to nibble on her pinky’s nail, Jessica shifted her scrutiny over her head to where Jamie and Rainy worked in low murmurs. She humphed, then shot a quick glance over her shoulder at the cluster of Knights.

“What did Erik say about Luke and Lexi?” she asked, referring to the Knights’ set of creepy twins and lowering her voice to a breathy whisper.

Gemma gratefully accepted the conversation topic. “Something about Lexi being the best handler of things back at their house.” She hesitated. Erik most likely meant that Lexi ran the study of the Morphers they held prisoner, but Oliver had asked her not to share that information with Jessica. Already unnerved by working with the Knights period, their friend might go off and become uncooperative if she knew about the other group’s hobbies.

If Jessica noticed her pause, her fumbling for the right words, she didn’t show it. She cocked her head, resuming Perceiving.
